On the other hand, sharks with spiracles can fall asleep quickly since they can stop swimming if they want to. Sharks that can’t stop swimming move into a rest period characterized by reduced activity. Sharks’ sleep can be divided into a less active and deep slumber. On the Hawaiian island of Maui, shark-attack survivor Bethany Hamilton heads into monstrous waves to surf, even after having lost her arm to a tiger shark as a 13-year-old junior surfing champion. Sharks do sleep, but not in the same way that humans do. At Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, professional surfer Mick Fanning narrowly escapes the jaws of a great white during the final of one of the world's biggest professional surfing competitions. A new study, however, finally confirms what anecdotal evidence and other research have long suggested these animals do slumber, just as we do. In Ballina on the east coast of Australia, Darren Rogers recounts how he tried to save Japanese surfer Tadashi Nakahara, who was mauled to death by a great white shark. It's been rumored that sharks don't sleep at all the fact some sharks must stay on the move to facilitate their breathing has contributed to this idea. The team also investigated the sort of behaviour that typically indicates sleep in other animals (including humans) such as closed. Sharks Never Sleep takes you around the world to meet shark-attack survivors, shark lovers and shark hunters, who tell us of the primal fear of being eaten alive by a wild animal, the unimaginable grief of losing a loved one and extraordinary stories of encounters with sharks. The researchers found that the sharks’ oxygen levels decreased consistently during their resting periods, and were able to confirm that when these levels extended past five minutes the sharks were indeed asleep.
